Malam ini, 6 Mei 2009, pk.21.00 - 22.00, di RCI Tampil! - 102.3 Rase FM - Bandung, ada penampilan akustik dan obrolan bersama Efek Rumah Kaca. Sampai jumpa di udara! ;D |  | Some moments linger to draw a smile. I was in the line for about two and a half hours, after Java Jazz Festival announced that Swing Out Sister had rescheduled their performance from 22.45 to 00.30 am ! It was going to be a long night. By the time they opened the gate, it was already a jaw dropping span of rowing fans.
It’s both exciting and a little disappointing that it turned out to be an acoustic set (percussions, guitar, keyboard and double bass). Seemingly the same set as in previous SOS Japan tour. It’s the first Swing Out Sister concert in Indonesia, most of the fans expected a full-set performance, and the rest were anticipated to enjoy the stripped-down versions. To the latter, intros became more interesting than ever, they kinda kept you guessing in excitement if your favorite song’s up. That’s what happened from the opening song “Surrender” to the encore “Breakout”. One song to another, delivered with soulful harmony, something that’s undeniably very SOS. My personal favorite is the ‘alternate’ version of “Somewhere In The World”. Most of the crowd seemed to be only familiar to the songs up to Shapes And Pattern era. The likes of “Butterfly”, “Somewhere Deep In The Night”, “Where Do I Go” and “ Love Won’t Let You Down” only got a few sing-alongs. It’s very understood, since the first Indonesian release after 1996 is Beautiful Mess so there’s quite a gap.
Corrine, who wore a very colorful dress, succeeded to get the crowd to stay upbeat by being communicative and flawless. Her expressions of finally having a show in Indonesia, her greetings in Bahasa, and her memorable attempt to inspire the crowd to shake by performing a hulahoop dance, it’s just adorable. After 15 songs and an encore, the band bowed down and finished their last night of the Asian Tour. Their talent of being professional entertainer have proven itself. Swing Out Sister has a lot to offer, even when it’s (only) an acoustic set. Hope they enjoyed it much as we did.
Those years of waiting, it finally happened. Hopefully, it’s the first of more to come. Everybody’s smiling when they exited Cendrawasih Room - Jakarta Convention Center, earlier this morning. It was surely an intimate session, a moment to remember.

As usual, live performance & talk bits. This time by The Morning After. Wednesday, November 5th 2008, starting on 9PM. Only on 102.3 Rase FM Bandung This (one) is for everyone. Tune in!  Pure Saturday (PS) berkumpul di ruang bersama 102.3 Rase FM Bandung dari sekitar pukul 20.30, Rabu 03 September 2008. Hadir tanpa crew, Adhi, Udhi, Arief, Ade dan sang manajer Jamie tampak sibuk mempersiapkan wiring & tuning tiga buah gitar akustik/semi akustik yang tergeletak di atas sofa, setengah jam sebelum acara RCI Tampil! dimulai. Satria NB yang akrab dipanggil Iyo, sang vokalis, sedang ‘sibuk’ perang di arena Counter Strike di ruangan lain. Tidak berapa lama, acara yang terdiri dari interview dan live performance ini, dimulai.
Interview dibuka dengan ice breaking seputar fakta bahwa cukup lama tenggang waktu antara dirilisnya “Time For A Change, Time To Move On” dengan roadshow ke radio untuk mendukung promosi album tersebut. “Yah…biar momentnya pas ama bulan Puasa” jawab Arief sambil nyengir. Tampaknya itu alasan yang cukup diplomatis, ketimbang menyalahkan pihak yang harusnya menangani urusan ini. Sebuah recorded-insert mengudara setelah itu. Isinya adalah sebuah brief profile PS disambung dengan opini tentang PS sekaligus potongan lagu PS yang dinyanyikan oleh AriEl (Vincent Vega), Arina (Mocca) dan Ajie (The Milo). Kembali ke interview, Iyo kemudian bercerita bahwa album ini dibuat agar eksistensi PS tetap ada, diingat dan sekaligus diperkenalkan pada generasi penikmat musik yang sekarang. Seperti diketahui, kecuali “Spoken” dan “Pagi” semua lagu di album ini adalah lagu lama dari ketiga album sebelumnya yang direkam ulang dengan pembeda di line vocals dan guitar fills. Lagu-lagu di album yang merupakan rilisan mereka ke-4 ini, langsung dipilih oleh para personel PS dan juga atas dasar masukan beberapa teman.
Lagu “Pagi”, satu dari 2 lagu baru di album ini, menjadi lagu pertama yang dibawakan secara live pada malam itu.
Waktu disinggung tentang kejelasan status vokalis, Ade menjawab secara implisit bahwa Iyo-lah vokalis PS saat ini, terlepas dengan ‘perpisahan’ yang sempat di-ceremonialkan di sebuah konser di CCF Bandung. Dan tidak ada alasan khusus untuk membuat rekaman dengan 2 vokalis di 2 lagu baru di album ini, selain unsur ‘fun’ dan faktor pertemanan mereka dengan 2 vokalis itu. Vakum di antara “Utopia (1998)” dan “Elora (2005)” juga bukan karena tidak adanya vokalis (Suar harus berada di luar Bandung karena bekerja offshore), tapi lebih karena hilangnya mood bermusik (untuk sesaat) di antara personil PS. Akhirnya, di 2005, mereka mengasingkan diri selama 10 hari di sebuah daerah yang secluded, di luar Bandung, lengkap dengan semua peralatan musik, untuk merampungkan materi yang ada & menulis yang baru. Nantinya lagu-lagu ini menjadi album “Elora”.
Ketika bernostalgia tentang proses rekaman “Utopia”, personil PS tampak semangat bercerita. “Wah gila tuh masa-masa 98 itu. Kita deg-degan dan mikir banget kalau mau berangkat rekaman di Jakarta” kata Arief. “Suar & pacarnya waktu itu sempet kejebak dalam daerah yang rusuh” kata Adhi. Ade menambahkan “ Studio kita kan di Jakarta Utara, waktu itu daerah sana sama sekali gak kondusif, jadi kita bela-belain bolak-balik Cisarua – Pluit setiap hari”. Kendala non-teknis jadi faktor yang membuat “Utopia” album terberat dalam proses rekamannya. Pertanyaan kemudian beralih ke soal kenapa lagu “Kosong” yang dipilih untuk dibawakan oleh Mocca, Koil, Goodnight Electric, Alone At Last dan PS secara berbarengan pada saat mereka terlibat di event Jamrevolution. Iyo berkomentar “Mungkin lagu itu dipilih karena yang paling familiar di antara mereka (5 band tersebut). Atau yang dianggap paling mewakili generasi mereka dengan PS. Kami sih seneng-seneng aja gak usah ngulik lagu orang…hehe. Dan prosesnya ribet banget memang” .
Tidak lama kemudian “Spoken” dibawakan dengan latar suara Celia (putri dari Ade) yang sedang merengek pada ibunya.
Pada sesi interaktif (dengan pendengar) pertama, beberapa sms pendengar berhasil membuat PS memaparkan fakta – fakta berikut :
· Konsep kover “Time For A Change, Time To Move On” diawali dari sketsa milik Adhi di sela-sela proses rekaman di studio. Akhirnya, beberapa simbol dari lagu-lagu PS yang ada di album ini muncul dalam kovernya. · Ade tidak jadi berangkat bekerja ke New Zealand. Sebelumnya sempat bergulir kabar ini dan sempat mengundang pertanyaan siapa yang akan menjadi penggantinya. · Ide dasar penulisan lirik digagas oleh masing-masing personil dan diterjemahkan dalam kata-kata oleh Ade. · Influens dalam bermusik tentunya bermacam-macam, tapi yang menjadi common ground mereka adalah kegemaran terhadap The Cure. · Inovasi mungkin baru akan ada di album berikutnya. Tapi, 2 lagu baru di album ini sudah cukup punya sesuatu yang baru karena sedikit keluar dari ‘pakem” PS selama ini dan cukup kental kadar pop-nya. · Yang lagi didengarkan PS hari-hari ini : Beatles (Arief), Cinta Laura & The Shins (Iyo), Glam rock 80an (Udhi) dan Mastodon (Adhi). Ade cukup bingung dengan pertanyaan ini, dia mendengarkan banyak karena setiap minggu siaran di Rase FM.
Lagu ketiga, “Di Bangku Taman” ditampilkan pada malam itu dengan sangat santai, diselingi tawa & gurau di antara personil.
Di sesi interaktif (masih dengan pendengar) kedua, PS bercerita bahwa :
- Ide untuk merekam cover version lagu milik org lain pernah ada. Sempat diajukan ke manajemen Genesis, tapi prosesnya ternyata tidak mudah dan waktu itu PS tidak di-back up oleh label yang bisa membantu dalam hal-hal yang prosedural & birokratis ini. Maybe some other time.
- Band lokal rilisan major label yg sekarang sedang digemari adalah Padi. Karena menurut Iyo & Ade, musiknya Padi itu smart & bagus, terutama album Padi yg terakhir, ada sedikit warna art rock-nya, kurang lebih se-kepala dengan PS tentang konsep sebuah lagu (yang bagus).
- Inilah cara mendengarkan musik PS dengan kenikmatan maksimal
- Selesai kerja, bikin kopi, jgn nonton tv, dengerin PS sambil tiduran. ”Dengerin lagi & lagi, karena saya juga suka takjub dengan nada atau ketukan tertentu yang baru ketemu dari hasil ngedengerin utk yg kesekian kalinya” (Iyo).
- ”Mau tidur dengerin PS” (Udhi)
- ”Dalam perjalanan panjang, (di tol misalnya), asal jangan jadi ngelamun” (Adhi)
- ”Kalau lagi mumet, jangan denger lagu belati (dari Utopia), bahaya!” (Arief)
· Proyek bareng Burger Kill mudah-mudahan akhir tahun ini akan rampung. ”Karena kesibukan yang ada, yah itu mah proyek jangka panjang aja” jelas Ade. · Sejak tahun ’94 bermusik, yang dirasakan susah dari bermusik di Indonesia adalah susahnya masuk tv nasional. ”Gak tau mungkin karena kami (independent) udah dibanned/blocked kali ya?” kata Arief. · Satu hal yang ingin dicapai oleh Pure Saturday adalah tetap eksis dengan segmentasi (penikmat) yang meluas. ”...dan merubah persepsi orang tentang musik Indonesia” Arief menegaskan.
Sesi RCI Tampil! malam itu ditutup dengan versi akustik dari ”Buka”.
Senang rasanya melihat teman-teman lama ini masih berkarya dan tetap dalam kualitas yang berkembang. Terbersit ide untuk menulis tentang interview ini, untuk mereka, para fans Pure Saturday yang mungkin akan tertarik dengan facts & trivias dari hasil sesi malam ini. ‘Thirteens’ is one album that I thought would end up like Fiona Apple’s ‘Extraordinary Machine’ which never sees the light of day. It’s a long wait since several new songs were up on Leona Naess myspace page from time to time. Keeping the fans in questions if the album is ever gonna be out. Now after 5 years in waiting, it’s here to answer em all.
Eleven new tracks, released by Verve Forecast -the new home of Ms.Leona, bring out the same atmosphere found in her 2003 release ‘Leona Naess’. With a more stripped down and direct sounds, from the beautifully haunting ‘Ghosts in The Attic”, the soul soaring “Heavy Like Sunday” (the first single of the album) to the finale “On My Mind” you’ll find that Leona still has such a cool & gifted creative mind to craft beautiful melodies capturing the emotional insides. Her forth album is filled with songs about dreams, friends, and lovers , not in very optimistic ways nor pessimistic, but exactly swings in between.
Fans of this lovely Newyorker will expect for songs with hooks and lines that one can’t help humming to. Or simply, songs that will be a winning track for a mixtape. “Learning as We Go”, “Un-Named” and “Leave Your Boyfriend Behind” are just about right. The latter has an alternative version apparently. If you buy the album from iTunes, you’ll get the exclusive version of the song with Leona’s ex-boyfriend Ryan Adams on it.
Though it’s not much musically evolving, Leona Kristina Naess is continue to create such great guitars laden pop and lush sounds, added with a new approach of southern touch bits. 'Thirteens' may not be as great as all her previous releases but it sure is worth waiting.

(Burt Bacharach) Burt Bacharach adalah seorang komposer legendaris asal Amerika Serikat yang selama lima puluh tahun karirnya telah menciptakan kurang lebih 70 lagu hits yang mengubah pandangan dunia terhadap lagu pop itu sesungguhnya. Bagi Bacharach, lagu pop yang mudah diingat orang tidak selalu berarti lagu yang murahan. Dalam setiap karyanya, Bacharach menciptakan tanda tangan pribadinya yang terdengar mahal melalui aransemen-aransemen yang kompleks serta nada-nada yang tidak tertebak yang hebatnya, semua itu tetap terdengar natural dan tidak pretensius. Ataupun grup rock The White Stripes yang mendaur ulang karya Bacharach dan menjadikan lagu "I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself" terdengar seperti karya asli mereka. The devil has all the best tunes, Paddy McAloon, the mastermind behind Prefab Sprout, once wrote in his song. If that so, then Hellsongs (Harriet Ohlsson, Johan Bringhed and Kalle Karlsson) might be a possessed collective that try to reform the tunes of devil-associated bands in a fresh, hellish, mind-deceiving sweetness.
No distortions, no heavypicked bass, no thrashing beats, no roars nor growls. An easylistening mix of acoustic guitars, brass/cellos, pianos, soft beats and female vocals that fall between Emily Haines and Regina Spektor. Hellsongs’ new arrangements of the songs are the most fun part to enjoy.
Yeah, there’re original traces left here and there of course, but still, this is one of the best covers album after Mark Kozelek’s ‘What’s Next To The Moon’, Charlotte Martin’s ‘Reproduction’ and Kate Roger’s ‘Seconds’. It has more nice surprising approach than Kathryn Williams’ ‘Relations’. Ten songs originally written & performed by Slayer, Megadeth, Metallica, AC/DC, Twisted Sister, Kiss, Black Sabbath, Saxon and Iron Maiden are nearer to heaven than to hell in these Swedish hands.

Just tune in to 102.3 Rase FM Bandung September 3rd, on 9.PM. | | The first night of UK Tour, friday nite, 20th of June 2008 at the Roundhouse, London. The setlist is differed by only one song to the previous two shows at the ICA. It's said to be better in sound quality, according to some people who saw them in the early 90s. It's ended with their signature of the famous 'Holocaust', an almost-18-minutes extension of "You Made Me Realise" which is pure white noise. Here's some pictures from those who're lucky enough to be there. Look at Bilinda, she's 47. Wow.

| | So they finally did it. Yesterday was day one of the UK tour, and by now, hundreds of people have experienced the dream of My Bloody Valentine gig. Blogs and forums are jam packed with last nite MBV performance in London related postings. But while I'm still looking up last nite’s raves, here’s what I found about their initial return.
Last week, on the 13th & 14th of June, the girls-boys sonic combo had two small gigs that they called Warm Up Rehearsal gig in ICA London. Soon after that, video clips and bootleg of the show were all over the internet. I was stunned and somehow overjoyed when I treasured all these informations. And from what I’ve gathered, they played even louder than in the early 90s. There’re earplugs handed out for the audience on the venue and it’s advised to use em for the whole time of the show. This apparently didn’t happen sixteen years ago where it’s said that some people would actually have earache for coping with the noise of My Bloody Valentine. The setlist didn’t leak any new songs from the three-quarter done new materials (there’s an interesting review about the new album, rumoured to be titled “Falling Upwards Again”, on Last FM blog). It seems that they haven’t changed much in appearance, stage-act wise, compared to some MBV live video bootlegs of the 90s. They still got it. The energy and the loud guitar noise. Colm’s still drumming great and Deb is still more dynamic than the used-to-be-couple Kevin & Bilinda. Particularly, the track “I Only Said” has this interesting treatment that’s new to my ears. It’s not surfacing on the record, not on those past live boots, but clearly on this ICA performance. Like some repeated tone over the sequencer. The vocals are barely heard, drowned and blended with the sound. There's also some slightly different parts of "To Here Knows When".
Yeah, just try some of these links to get the idea. I really really wish I was there.

“What’s in the name?” kata William Shakespeare. Nama adalah identitas dan cerminan pribadi kata banyak primbon. Nama bisa sesederhana Budi dan Wati seperti di buku SD jaman dahulu. Atau straight to the point seperti Serigala Melolong dan Elang Menyambar, layaknya dalam kultur Indian yang menamai anak mereka berdasarkan situasi dan kondisi ketika si bayi lahir. Nama band merupakan identitas dari sebuah entitas hasil peleburan karakter para personelnya, terlepas dari adanya dominasi satu personel ketimbang yang lain. Yang menarik, ada beragam “kultur” dan fenomena yang menjadi dasar bagi penamaan sebuah band. Nama band bisa saja sesimpel alasan “Because it’s sound cool! That’s it”. Bisa juga dicomot langsung dari kamus tanpa harus susah payah memikirkan makna mendalam yang ada pada kata tersebut. Seperti kata ‘Rapid Eye Movement’ yang kemudian disingkat menjadi nama band R.E.M. Seperti kita ketahui, musik R.E.M. sama sekali bukan mimpi buruk (yang merupakan penyebab dari Rapid Eye Movement). Nama band hasil dari kenangan masa kecil yang kurang menyenangkan juga ada, seperti Weezer yang berasal dari masa lalu seorang nerd bernama Rivers Cuomo. Film atau Novel sering menjadi inspirasi untuk sebuah nama band. Seperti nama Duran Duran yang ternyata merupakan nama penjahat dalam film era 60an bertajuk Barbarella. Atau Joy Division, yang bersumber dari dialog pada sebuah novel sado masokis. Nama band bisa berasal dari pengaruh band atau musisi lainnya. Cocteau Twins misalnya, diambil dari lirik lagu salah satu band 80an, atau Radiohead yang menamakan band mereka berdasarkan judul lagu sebuah band Inggris. Kelompok sekaliber Joey Ramone dkk. mendapatkan nama keluarga “Ramones” dari nama samaran seorang gitaris sebuah band legendaris. Bahkan teori ekonomi-pun, bisa jadi sumber nama band, seperti Pulp misalnya. Lalu, apa pula arti 182 di belakang nama Blink? Mengapa tidak 999 agar hoki seperti sop kaki kambing atau 1023 sekalian biar banyak. Sama halnya dengan kenapa harus ada angka 3 di belakang nama Mojave? Mari telusuri latar belakang & cerita menarik seputar penamaan band. Mulai dari Depeche Mode, Beaumont, Trembling Blue Star sampai Nyi mas Pandanwangi, dll.
